How to Buy a YouTube Channel: Checks, Prices and Handover
A YouTube channel is the most valuable social asset you can buy — and the easiest to overpay for. Here is the checklist we run before a channel is listed.

What’s inside
- 1. Start with the health of the channel, not the numbers
- 2. Ask for the analytics that actually matter
- 3. Price it on profit, not pride
- 4. Get the handover right
- 5. Your first 30 days as the new owner
YouTube rewards history. A channel with three years of watch time, a warmed-up audience and a working recommendation signal is worth far more than a new channel with the same subscriber count. That is exactly why buying one can be smart — and why the wrong purchase is expensive.
1. Start with the health of the channel, not the numbers
- Community guideline strikes and copyright claims in the last 90 days.
- Whether videos are still being recommended, or views fell off a cliff months ago.
- How many videos are reused or licensed content rather than original uploads.
- Whether the audience country matches the country you want to sell to.
2. Ask for the analytics that actually matter
| Metric | Why it matters | Healthy sign |
|---|---|---|
| Watch time (365 days) | Drives recommendations | Stable or rising |
| Average view duration | Shows real interest | Above 35% of video length |
| Returning viewers | Audience loyalty | A steady share, not all new |
| RPM | Earning power per 1,000 views | Consistent month to month |
Screenshots can be edited. Ask for a live screen share of YouTube Studio instead — thirty seconds tells you more than twenty images.
3. Price it on profit, not pride
If the channel earns, work from twelve months of AdSense and sponsorship income and apply a multiple of roughly 18 to 30 times monthly profit. If it does not earn yet, price it on what the audience would cost you to build: subscribers, watch time and how expensive the niche is to grow.
4. Get the handover right
- 1Agree the price, payment method and timeline in writing first.
- 2Confirm whether you are receiving the Google account or a Brand Account transfer.
- 3Receive the recovery email and phone, then change both to your own.
- 4Enable your own two-factor security immediately after access.
- 5Link your own AdSense payee and re-apply for monetisation if required.
5. Your first 30 days as the new owner
Do not rebrand on day one. Keep publishing in the same format and posting rhythm for at least a month so the recommendation system keeps serving your videos, then shift the content direction gradually.

Frequently asked questions
Can you legally buy a YouTube channel?
Yes. Channels change hands regularly. The clean route is a full Google account handover, or moving the channel into the buyer's Brand Account. Problems only appear when someone sells access without transferring real ownership.
Does monetisation survive a sale?
Not automatically. A change of ownership can trigger a fresh review, and AdSense is tied to the payee, not the channel. Budget for a short re-approval window and never pay a premium purely for a monetisation badge.
What is a fair price for a YouTube channel?
Channels that earn money usually sell for 18 to 30 times monthly profit. Non-earning channels are priced on subscribers, watch time and niche demand instead.
